A multidisciplinary approach to the study of the fluminense vegetation Anais da ABC (AABC)
KELECOM,ALPHONSE; REIS,GEISA L.; FEVEREIRO,PAULO C.A.; SILVA,JANIE G.; SANTOS,MARCELO G.; MELLO NETO,CÍCERO B.; GONZALEZ,MARCELO S.; GOUVEA,RITA C.S.; ALMEIDA,GILBERTO S.S..
The fluminense vegetation, more specifically the flora from the Jurubatiba restinga has been investigated by a multidisciplinary team of botanists, chemist, radiobiologist, insect physiologists and geneticist. Vouchers of 564 specimens have been collected, identified, organized in an herbarium, and a database is being build up containing, in addition to classical botanical data, chemical data and information on the potential economic use either for landscape gardening, alternative foods or as medicinal plants. Phytochemical studies of the Guttiferae, Clusia hilariana, yielded oleanolic acid and nemorosone. Their biological activities against the haematophagous insect Rhodnius prolixus vector of Chagas disease have been investigated. Finally, it has been...

Oleanolic Acid and Ursolic Acid in Commercial Dried Fruits OAK
ZHANG, Feng; DAIMARU, Eisuke; OHNISHI, Masao; KINOSHITA, Mikio; TOKUJI, Yoshihiko; 得字, 圭彦.
Oleanolic acid (OA) and ursolic acid (UA) are natural triterpenoids that have preventive properties such as anti-tumor and anti-hepatitis activities. These triterpenes are known to exist in several medicinal plants and fruit skins. Dried fruits are usually eaten without removing the skin; thus, they may be good resources for oral intake of OA and UA. HPLC analysis of OA and UA contents in a variety of dried fruits showed that raisins contained higher levels of OA than the other fruits investigated, with green raisins containing the highest levels (79.0 mg/100 g). While raisins were found to contain only OA, dried cranberries, blueberries and cherries were shown to contain both OA and UA. The highest level of UA (65.9 mg/100 g) was detected in cranberries,...

Oleanolic acid and ursolic acid inhibit peptidoglycan biosynthesis in Streptococcus mutans UA159 BJM
Park,Soon-Nang; Ahn,Sug-Joon; Kook,Joong-Ki.
In this study, we revealed that OA and UA significantly inhibited the expression of most genes related to peptidoglycan biosynthesis in S. mutans UA159. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to introduce the antimicrobial mechanism of OA and UA against S. mutans.

Oleanolic acid from black raisins, Vitis vinifera with antioxidant and antiproliferative potentials on HCT 116 colon cancer cell line BJPS
Sasikumar,Kandasamy; Dubey,Vinay; Ghosh,Asit Ranjan.
Vitis vinifera (black raisin) is commonly used in traditional medicine for the treatment of various ailments. In the present study, anti-oxidative and anti-cancer efficacy of oleanolic acid from ethyl acetate fraction of black raisins was evaluated and oleanolic acid was isolated without using of any chromatographic techniques and subjected to spectral assessment using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MS and FT-IR for structural confirmation. Antiproliferative efficacy of oleanolic acid against human colon adenocarcinoma HCT-116 cells was assessed using cell viability assay. The minimum inhibitory concentration (IC50) was determined and found to be 40 µg/mL at 48h incubation. Furthermore, antioxidant property of oleanolic acid was analyzed using...

Variation in concentrations of major bioactive compounds in Prunella vulgaris L. related to plant parts and phenological stages Biol. Res.
Chen,Yuhang; Zhu,Zaibiao; Guo,Qiaosheng; Zhang,Lixia; Zhang,Xiaoming.
Prunella vulgaris L. (Labiatae) contains a variety of structurally diverse natural products, primarily rosmarinic acid (RA), ursolic acid (UA) and oleanolic acid (OA), which possess a wide array of biological properties. In the present study, P. vulgaris was harvested at three developmental stages (vegetative, full-flowering and mature-fruiting stages), dissected into stem and leaf tissues and assayed for chemical contents using high performance liquid chromatography. Significant changes in the concentrations of the major secondary metabolites (RA, UA and OA) were observed at the different development stages. The highest concentrations of RA, UA and OA were found at the full-flowering stage (15.83 mg/g dry weight (DW) RA, 1.77 mg/g DW UA and 0.65 mg/g DW...
